1. What is a flat character? Provide examples from Romeo and Juliet

A flat character is a character with little details, or with a single trait. They are usually minor characters. A flat character is someone whose traits do not change, or their outlook stays the same. Examples: Tybalt, mercutio, the nurse

A round character is someone whos views change over time, usually a main character. They have many traits (like a real person). They have both negative and positive personality traits. Example: Romeo or Juliet, Friar Lawrence

He is Juliet's cousin
An angry, stubborn, rentless natured man

Tybalt doesn't think they need peace and doesn't believe in it.

Mercutio is Romeo’s close friend. He’s strange but has a large imagination, and loves wordplay. And he has a lot of mood swings and is probably bi-polar.

Their names have a meaning that describes their actions or the way they are.

The names of the characters have importance in the play because their meanings in the name describes who they are most of the time.
Mercutio= changeable. His moods change and he is umpredictable.
Tybalt= bold. He is always ready to fight.
Benvolio= well-wisher. He prefers peace and helping others (like Romeo)
Romeo= Romantic
Juliet= jewel. She is precious to Romeo and her family. She is beautiful.

  1. 1. Summarize the action in Act I.
In act 1. the capulets and montagues "battle" because one of the monatuges bites his thumb at a capulet and in the end the prince tells them if they ever bother the peace ever again their lives will be taken. Paris asks Juliet's father if he can marry her and have children, but Juliet's father tells him to wait two summers because Juliet's parents got married young and their relationship has been bitter ever since.

romeo and juliet meet and fall in love at first sight. they both realize that their families are mortal enimies. the nurse helps juliet sneak around and see romeo. the famous balcony scene was in this act. love, hate,dark, and light all occur in the act as well.juliet is also hesitant to share her feelings because he is older she thinks he will just play her, and leave her inlove with him.however they do end up getting married.we also meet the friar in this act.

  1. 1. Describe Juliet’s relationship with her parents.
Juliet's father is considerate and caring (at first) because he wants her to accept Paris, he will not force the marriage. Juilet doesn't really care too much about getting married. her mother is the one encouraging her while her dad is looking out for her, by saying she's too young.
Juliet's motherdoesn't seem to really know Juliet well. The nurse knows her better. The Nurse talks about her memories with juliet, opposed to Juliet's mother that can barely remember any joyful memories.




  1. 1. Describe Romeo’s relationship with Mercutio.
they are friends; however, Mercutio kind of teases him about being in love with all the women he claims to love.




  1. 1. What fears or reservations does Juliet have in scene ii?
that romeo is older, out of her league, shes scared that he will lead her on. but mostly because he is the only son of the family's enemies
She is afraid it is all moving too quickly

    Benvolio, his name means peace.
It is in act one, at the beginning. He is trying to stop the fighting, but Tybalt won't.
This quote shows that not everyone is keen to fight.



2. . …peace? I hate the word/ As I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee.
Tybalt, He doesn't believe in peace and he hates all the Montagues and benvolio
This quote happens at teh beginning of act I. It shows that a few violent people can keep the feaud going, as well as reveaing a lot about TYbalt.

3. Three civil brawls, bred of an airy word/ By thee, old Capulet, and Montague,/ Have thrice disturbed the quiet of our streets…If ever you disturb our streets again,/ Your lives shall pay the forfeit of that peace. Prince, hes saying that the montagues and capulets have distrubedted the peace of the streets and if they disturbe it again they will die.

4. Younger than she are happy mothers made.
Paris is talking about girls, younger than juliet, getting married and having children. He is speaking to her father, trying to convince him that Juliet is old enough to marry.

5. I’ll look to like, if looking liking move;/ But no more deep will I endart mine eye/ Than your consent gives strength to make it fly.

6. O, then I see Queen Mab hath been with you...This is she

7. Some consequence yet hanging in the stars/ Shall bitterly begin his fearful date/ With this night’s revels and expire the term/ Of a despised life, closed in my breast,/ By some vile forfeit of untimely death.
Romeo says this on the way to the party talking about his dream and how he will die
8. My only love sprung from my only hate!/ Too early seen unknown, and known too late!/ Prodigious birth of love it is to me/ That I must love a loathed enemy.
Juliet, Juliet finds out that romeo is a capulet and says that her only love is her enemy


9. But soft, what light through yonder window breaks?/ It is the east, and Juliet is the sun./ Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon,/ Who is already sick and pale with grief/That thou, her maid, art far more fair than she.
Basically Romeo is telling Juliet that she looks beautiful

10. O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo?/ Deny thy father and refuse thy name;/ Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love,/ And I'll no longer be a Capulet.
Juliet, she is telling romeo that if he marrys her she will change her name from Capulet to Montague.

11. What's in a name? That which we call a rose/ By any other name would smell as sweet.

12. Parting is such sweet sorrow/ That I shall say goodnight till it be morrow.
juliet says this to romeo in the famous balconey sence. what she meant was it was sweet falling in love with him and kissing him but it was sorrow because hes a montague and they can't be together because their familes hate one another.
13. O, she knew well/ Thy love did read by rote and could not spell./ But come, young waverer, come, go with me,/ In one respect I'll thy assistant be;/ For this alliance may so happy prove,/ To turn your households' rancor to pure love.
Friar Lawrence is saying this to Romeo. Friar Lawrence is saying that he will wed Romeo and Juliet.

14. A gentleman, nurse, that loves to hear himself talk/ and will speak more in a minute that he will stand to/ in a month.
Romeo is talking to the nurse about Mercutio on the street saying how Mercutio would talk more then he would listen even if he is wrong.
15. These violent delights have violent ends/ And in their triumph die, like fire and powder./ Which, as they kiss, consume. The sweetest honey/ Is loathsome in his own deliciousness/ And in the taste confounds the appetite./ Therefore love moderately: long love doth so:/ Too swift arrives as tardy as too slow.
